Most people would lump Lutherans in with other Protestant religions. We are actually quite unique. Lutheranism is named after an Augustinian monk named Martin Luther (1483-1546). Luther started the Reformation when he posted his Ninety-Five Theses on the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany on October 31, 1517. These were a challenge to the Roman Catholic Church to mend some of its erroneous ways. Instead of changing the church in Rome a new church body of Lutherans was born.
Martin Luther taught the Three "Solas".
Grace alone (sola gratia) - We believe that we are saved (or justified, held blameless) by God's grace alone and not by any fine living or good works that we may do. Our faith causes good works. Good works do not cause faith.
Faith alone (sola fide) - We believe that every one who hears the Good News that Christ died for our sins and believes in Him will have eternal life.
Scripture alone (sola scriptura) - We believe that the Holy Word of God is contained only in the scriptures. The bible is without error and the only source from which doctrine should be taken.
St. Paul's Lutheran Church acknowledges and accepts all the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments as the revealed Word of God, verbally inspired. Dr. Martin Luther says it so well in the catechism in answer to these questions;
"Who wrote the Bible?" - "Holy men of God wrote the Bible. The prophets wrote the books of the Old Testament, and the Evangelists and the Apostles wrote the books of the New Testament."
"Whose word, then, is every word of the Bible?" - "Every word of the Bible is God's word, and therefore the Bible is without error."
The Apostles Creed from the 3rd century A.D. is a concise summary of what we believe. You may want to read it now before continuing on this page.
We believe in the Holy Trinity - the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is incomprehensible to us that there are three Godheads and yet they are one, but it is so. For a more complete description of the Holy Trinity,you will want to read the Athanasian Creed.
We believe that Holy Baptism imparts forgiveness of sins. We believe in infant baptism since all people are born into a sinful state since the fall of Adam.
We believe that in the Sacrament of the Altar (Holy Communion) we also receive forgiveness of sins. We believe in the "real presence" which means that we are receiving the body and blood of Christ, in, with, and under the visible signs of the bread and wine. It was instituted by Christ himself.
We believe that Our Lord Jesus Christ will come again with glory on the Last Day to judge us. He will raise to life the bodies of all the dead. Those who believe in Him and have his forgiveness will receive eternal life. Those who reject Him will be punished in Hell with the devil for all eternity.
St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church acknowledges and accepts all of the Symbolical Books of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, contained in the Book of Concord of 1580, to be a true and genuine exposition of the doctrines of the Bible. These Symbolical Books are: the three Ecumenical Creeds ( The Apostle's Creed, The Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed.), the Unaltered Augsburg Confession of 1530, The Apology of the Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles, Luther's Small Catechism, Luther's Large Catechism, and the Formula of Concord.
